Late last week we were reminded that while Ethan grows and develops into an amazing young person, we're never really out of the woods.
As most of you know, Ethan is a part of a program that will follow him for most of his life. The idea being that healthcare people will learn more about kids with his conditions and see pitfalls before they become an issue, help educate families about the possible outcomes and so on. So, a good thing!
Part of that was a blood test that we needed to bring him in for.
Well, it turns out, his hemoglobin was extremely low, like, scary low. The same evening we did the blood test, one of the doctors involved in his program called and asked us to go to the hospital. She asked if he felt any different than normal, and if so, to go right away. As he didn't feel worse or any different, we slept at home, and then first thing in the morning went to the hospital.
Ethan any I spent the better part of the day there, getting more blood work done (he got finger poked and another needle). They confirmed the numbers were as low as the initial reading indicated.
He was prescribed a couple meds and scheduled for a new appointment on Tuesday of this week, and while it is still early days in terms of him taking these new meds, he's already feeling better. Colour back in his palms and under his eyelids, he has more energy than before.
Things seem to be ok, they seem to be improving, but this serves as a reminder that while things seem fine 99% of the time, we must always be on guard, we must always be watching. The scare isn't yet gone, we don't know the why of this yet, but we're in a better place as we know a few doctors are paying close attention to him.
